out in nowhere

So I work in the suburbs now. I assumed everyone knew but I guess it makes sense that they don't cause I generally don't like to brag about it. And not just the suburbs. OFF THE ISLAND suburbs. I'm talking I gotta take the metro, get on the suburb bus, then switch to another suburb bus, then work. The ride is long (1 1/2 hours there, up to 2 hours back) but it's really peaceful, even in the middle of the day. Not many people and looking out the window is usually best cause I get car sick pretty easily.

Anyways, the most inspiring thing I get to see while heading for the bridge to leave the city (other than sunrises) is the FARINE FIVE ROSES electric neon sign looming over me.

I love old things but I'm by no means a historian, so I never researched the sign or thought how old it might be, all I know is that it's gorgeous and a perfect reminder of the beautiful city I've lived in for 5 1/2 years now. Apparently it's quite old and in google image searching it online i found that there are a number of sites dedicated to art it's inspired and a project completely dedicated to "saving" it and reusing it.

This week I won't be in the suburbs- I'll be at Rockland for a visual merchandising workshop so that means more hours in my day! More time to sleep in! And less time to miss pups and kitty.

we ate lots of meat and hardly any veggies.

we went sale shopping and modeled our new clothes in the mcdonalds ladies room.

we went to bistro 422 and got crunk off their long island iced tea pitchers ($12!)

we tried to keep warm and took public transportation a lot.

i saw live comedy for the first time and hung out with my friend nick.

all in all it was a lot of fun.

Trana

I'm officially on vacation. Til Tuesday evening anyways. I'm visiting with one of my best gal pals, Jenna and her partner in crime, Jeffrey. They moved to Toronto this past summer and gave me the perfect opportunity to visit this fair city, seeing as i barely know it (blasphemous, huh?!)

My memories of Toronto can pretty much be summed up by visits to my grandma's house as a kid, then later her condo, stopping abruptly at the age of 13. After that I've visited three time- at 16 with my school friend Melissa to our rock god du jour Beck and his Midnite Vultures tour at the Molson Ampitheater, a reunion visit with my grandmother at the age of 21 and a weekend visit roadie-ing with Seripop. All this to say- I haven't really had much experience in this city- I barely know the street names and neighbourhoods. But I'm here now, for 4-5 days, in this exotic land a lot of people call 'home'.

Pictures are likely to follow, once i haul my monitor down the stairs to the garbage, set up chrissy's old monitor with my 'puter and upload the bad boys i am posed to take.

Happy January!!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

So this christmas my mom got me Season 2 of Project Runway on DVD. I had had the first two seasons "zipped" (canadian version of netflix) at the top of the list for what seemed like a year and with no luck, not to mention no cable. I don't want to give too much credit to some reality television show for "turning my head around" but DAY-YUM! I'm obsessed with this show, partially because it has motivated me to start not one, not two, but 4 personal creative projects! I've now watched all of Season 2, all of season 1 Canada, am in the middle of Season 3 and am currently enjoying Season 4 on youtube.

Season 4 is pretty good talent-wise. Mostly I feel like it's just full of nice-nice people, which is pretty boring, cause i already watched Project Runway Canada. So far, my favourite talent-wise has got to be Jillian. I think the way she speaks could get annoying pretty fast, but practically everything she does is gorgeous. I can't believe the judges passed on her for last season!

Christian makes for good TV but everyone else is kinda blah. Steven was an awful designer but at least he did good interviews. I hope if Jillian doesn't win then it goes to Kit or Christian. Anyone else on team Jillian?

I first was introduced to Little Otsu my first visit into Atelier Woodenapples here in Montreal. Their hand drawn planners and notebooks combine intricate drawings and everyday organisational needs so well that you almost feel like it was you who doodled in the margins.

I bought this 2008 Endangered Species calendar by Jennie Smith

for my roommate Chrissy and currently covet their Non-Planner datebook by Keri Smith

Now I see LO popping up in lots of local shops and I can't say I'm surprised. The most expensive items they have sell for $16 perfect for us cheapskate Montrealers who still want to buy and gift handmade.

Shiloh's "art"

Ok, so i know they're only shoes, and technically they didn't cost me that much (approx. $40 each) but damnit! Those grey ones were my absolute favourite. I guess I could try sanding the heels down....

So far my resolutions are going really well. I keep getting great ideas for new projects but I need to finish at least one before I start another. I've been watching Project Runway religiously and it's inspired me to get off my butt and learn stuff.

On the 17th I'm heading to Toronto to visit one of my best girls, Jenna, among other friends. Can anyone recommend fun independent stores to check out, or yarn/thread/crafty places? I know Amy from woodenapples said Toronto has some of the best upscale yarn stores ever.

Just cause uploading photos is still such a thrill, I present you with Luca: my better half.

Happy New Year

Well, it's official. I told myself I would start a blog and what better day to start it then January 1st?
One of my major resolutions for this year was to start contributing to the art/fashion world myself in additon to supporting it more visibly. I don't really have a clear idea how this gonna work, but stay tuned, the lady now has a digital camera.

Other things I wanna do this year:

  1. Learn how to upload pictures on this thing.
  2. Renew my passport
  3. Book my flights to Austin and Chicago (sxsw, baby!)
  4. Drink 1 litre of H2O everyday, among other healthy things.
  5. Allow room to make mistakes/ cheat but make sure i'm back on track the next day.
  6. Keep my camera on me more and take lots of pictures.
  7. Go for my driver's license after my birthday.
  8. Start closet renewal projects for people I know.
  9. Pay off my Visa (or at least almost!)
